We count our blessings every day for the fact we live in an incredibly beautiful region, which is also a mecca for wine fans the world over. We’re also lucky enough to spend our days in the wonderful spots that people travel from all over the world to visit – so we get to know some good spots! In our new series of ‘Locals Favourite’ blog posts, we’re sharing with you some of our not-so-secret secret spots…starting with…
Hans Herzog Estate
Despite being among Marlborough’s smallest wineries, producing less than 3000 cases a year, Hans Herzog pack a real punch – and it’s easy to see why they’re a favourite of locals.
Hans & Therese Herzog settled in New Zealand in 1994 from their home (and world famous estate and restaurant) in Switzerland, and have spent the last 21 years building a European style winery right here in the heart of Marlborough.
All their grapes are grown on their own organically managed vineyards, and their wines are all carefully crafted into small batches of very impressive wines. The tasting room is sophisticated and luxurious – yet somehow very relaxed.
Wines: Despite having a small estate, Herzog produce 29 varieties – so there’s plenty to choose from and always something new to discover. Pull up a seat at the tasting bar and see why our guests love the delicious and textural Viognier, or the rich and powerful ‘Spirit of Marlborough’ (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon).
Top tip: Having created a Michelin star restaurant at their estate in Switzerland, it’s easy to see why the Herzog Restaurant and Bistro is often considered one of New Zealand’s best dining experiences. If you find yourself in Marlborough on a sunny afternoon, treat yourself to a decadent meal in the beautiful bistro gardens.
