The mention of Marlborough would sound incomplete without paying tribute to its zingy accomplice, Sauvignon Blanc. We owe a lot to this little grape that whips Marlborough into an excited frenzy each autumn as we extract its fragrant juice for our distinguished wines. Perhaps that’s why this year, Marlborough decided one day wasn’t enough to celebrate our love of Sauvignon Blanc. This year, we are celebrating sixteen days leading up to International Sauvignon Blanc Day on 5th May with mini-events, special tastings, and giveaways.
This Way to the Celebration
When a region like Marlborough decides to celebrate, you can truly expect some magnificent things. The wineries are making this a special time to visit the region and learn about Sauvignon Blanc. From Brancott hosting a “Mastery of Sauvignon Blanc” session daily, to Sauvignon Blanc themed set menus at the Picton Yacht Club and Allan Scott Wines, there is an abundance of ways to both enjoy and find out more about the grape that jumpstarted winemaking in our region.
Of course, the grand finale will be on 5th May, which is recognised across the world as International Sauvignon Blanc Day. There will be an abundance of ways to explore and celebrate. A few of our favourites on the day include Saint Clair’s special tasting of their Single Vineyard Pioneer Block Sauvignons, Lawson’s Dry Hills‘ event which will feature their winemaker discussing why Sauvignon Blanc tastes so good with goat cheese, with lots of samples provided, and the Wither Hills degustation lunch, designed to show off Sauvignon Blanc.
It won’t just be the wineries abuzz with celebration; you won’t want to miss Scotch Wine Bar, who will taste guests through eleven Sauvignon Blancs from across the globe. For dinner, check out the newly remodelled and super lux Marlborough Lodge, who intend to pamper their guests with local specialties prepared to match some of Marlborough’s top Sauvignon Blancs.
Sounds Connection Pick
Ever fancy yourself a winemaker? Try your hand by booking a Sauvignon Blanc blending session with Wither Hills, temporarily available as part of the International Sauvignon Blanc celebration from now until 5th May. It’s the perfect way to gain insight into what winemakers go through to bring you the perfect balance of flavour. Compare your blend to the classic Wither Hills styles. Afterwards you might feel a pang of jealousy for the lucky person who struck career gold getting to taste Sauvignon Blanc all day as part their daily grind. Who knows, it might be the start of your own career change!
