Today’s the day. Just in time for Christmas, the blue cod season opens again!
From 20 December until 31 August (both days inclusive), you are allowed to catch blue cod in the Marlborough Sounds. For the rest of the year the area is closed, so now’s the time to head out on a fishing trip and catch yourself some of this excellent eating fish.
Be aware of the regulations though, while you can catch the fish in the Sounds during the open season, limits are in place:
- You can only take or possess two blue cod per fisher at any one time. This applies even if you caught the fish from outside the area and you are transporting the fish through the area.
- You can only have blue cod that are a minimum of 33cm in length. There is not a maximum size stipulated.
- Full fish must be brought ashore before filleting.
You can also find out more on the Ministry for Primary Industries website.
Here’s what chef Peter Gordon has to say about the mighty blue cod:
If I had to choose a favourite fish in New Zealand, it would likely be blue cod. I love its small sweet fleshy flakes and the flavour is divine — slightly sweet, definitely fishy, subtle but strong. The texture is firm and delicate at the same time, if that’s possible, and it goes well with so many flavours, as long as they aren’t overpowering.
We like it best dusted with flour and fried in a little butter and oil and – of course – matched with a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. How about you?
Our skippers are experienced blue cod fishers and can take you to the best spots in the Marlborough Sounds. We also know the rules and regulations inside out so you can relax and enjoy catching, and later eating, your fair amount of this tasty fish while we keep tabs for you.
If you’d like to try catching some blue cod for yourself over the season, why not book yourself and your family or friends into one of our half day or full day fishing charters? We’d love to hear from you.
